Feed back after one of our taster sessions:
"Thank you for today. When my son came home from school, he spent ages to me talking about maths, I think he loved the fact I was speaking a language that he recognised."
Early Years Foundation Stage
Our EYFS course is designed for the parents and carers of children who are in Reception class.
It will take you through the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, explain the Early Learning Goals and how these link into physical development, fine motor skills and communication and language .
Further sessions will then look at the EYFS literacy and maths curriculums and how all of these areas can be supported and developed at home.
KEY STAGE 1
Our Key Stage 1 course is designed for parents and carers of children in years 1 and 2.
We will be looking at end of Key Stage expectations, maths methods and strategies used in the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) resources used with hands on examples and the reasons behind these concepts and methods.
Along with the initial maths course we will be creating other sessions and courses looking at the literacy curriculum, including phonics, reading and grammar.
KEY STAGE 2
Our Key Stage 2 course is designed for the parents and carers of children in years 3 to 6.
This course will look at the expectations of children in KS2 and what to expect from the year 6 SATs papers.
We will also focus on the different methods that the children are taught in maths; including chunking, the bar method and the grid method - yes, sometimes it sounds like another language!
Literacy sessions will also be available covering reading, writing and grammar.
My name is Victoria Burt and I have been in the teaching profession for fourteen years. During this time I have held a number of positions including head of maths at a large primary school.
I have often heard parents say that they struggle to support their children with their homework particularly in maths. Methods, strategies and teaching and learning have all changed and parents find it difficult to help with homework - hence Coffee, Cake and Calculations was born.
As the concept developed I wanted it to become much more than simply homework help for parents. It occurred to me that parents who are not in education often do not know what children actually do in school all day - after all when a parent asks their child what they did in school, often at best, they only tell you what they had for lunch!
My aim is to take the mystery out of the classroom. What do children learn? How do they learn and why is it taught in a particular way? What do "age related expectations" look like? How can I support my child in their learning? The courses and sessions will answer all of these questions and more. Please take a look at our website for more information and, of course, you are welcome to contact me if you have any questions or queries.
Feedback after one of our Key Stage 1 courses:
"The whole course was extremely well set out. It is great to see how our kids are being taught. It was helpful to be able to show my daughter other ways of understanding the maths in front of her, and helped me with fraction - I have always hated them! The small groups were great and it was very easy to ask question -plus the cake was amazing!"
Feedback after Introduction to Key Stage 1 Maths session:
"This is a great idea. It is not about pushing a child, but supporting and guiding them. My daughter gets very upset about doing maths at school and I now feel I have some tools to help her."
"There were so many good illustrations and a great teacher. It was a lovely relaxed atmosphere where all questions were welcomed. Brilliant!"
"The session was excellent! So informative and really helpful in preparing for KS1. So glad to have attended. Thank you!"
"I would 100% recommend this to a friend. To understand modern learning concepts and how they are used in the classroom is a great insight into my child's learning."
"Very useful, I feel so much better equipped to support my child through their learning."
"This course provided an excellent breakdown of the way children are being taught now and what they are expected to understand. Invaluable to know how to support my child's learning."
"The examples and tools all helped bring to life what was being talked about. I feel really well prepared to help out with homework and have already started using some of the tips you gave me. Really brilliant sessions."
